I think it might help if I tell you about the best first date I've ever had...well, actually, there are two.
One of the best first dates began with dinner at a local sports bar which was not the best part since it was distracting when it came to making conversation. Plus he wasn't much of a sports fan at all, and I don't particularly enjoy watching football which is too bad because football season was just getting underway. Anyhow, after dinner he taught me about geocaching and we spent the next two hours hunting for and finding several teensy caches... in a cemetary. It was fantastic! We were in public, in town, but not specifically having to interact with others. We were outside in a casual setting. And, we were working together on a common "mission". Plus I got to learn something new that I later shared with my daughters who, as I suspected, wound up loving it, too.
The other best first date happened by accident, not the date but the activity. The plans for our date were already set, meet up for food and drinks after work. We both worked in the same city. But that day I was scheduled to work 30-some miles away and when I got to the site my car was smoking... yikes! So I called him to cancel but the plans were changed, instead. We wound up working on my car. Instead of getting all dolled up for a night on the town with all of the anxiety-inducing formalities, we wound up wearing our most appropriate "work" clothes, casually conversing about all kinds of stuff amidst noisy tools and various car parts. It was dusty, dirty, and a little bit greasy but very, very relaxed. Plus, we were successful with completing the project.
My ideal first date is casual and unpretentious, only to be improved by having a common mission. Don't get me wrong, I love getting dressed up and I like more formal dates, too, but not straight out of the gate. To me, that feels like smoke and mirrors and reasons to stay extra guarded. << less
